Ward No. 20 is situated in a historical part of Kathmandu that has existed since the city’s establishment by King Gunakama Deva. Because it is an ancient settlement, it possesses a wealth of heritage sites. Nepal’s earliest stone water fountain, believed to have been built during Gunakama Deva’s time, is situated here. The renowned Kastha Mandap rest house, said to have been built out of the timber of a single tree (and after which Kathmandu has been named), the legendary Bhimsen temple and Sinlyan Sata are all located within the ward. Similarly, Gopur, one of the old city gates, lies buried in Kwahiti. Lakhu Phalcha, a streetside shelter associated with the founding of the Nepal Era, still stands in the ward. (According to the story, this was where the porters carrying the enchanted sand that turned into gold - and allowed Sankhadhar Sakhwa to pay off everybody's debts and start a new era - put down their loads and stopped for a rest.) Apart from being a historically important part of town, Ward No. 20 is also a vibrant ceremonial center. Lakhe Nani, the courtyard from where the lakhe demon dancer is brought out for Indra Jatra, is situated here. The Dagin procession that is held during Indra Jatra, and which reenacts Indra’s return to heaven, begins from Maru Tol in the ward. The ward has an area of 15.7 hectares, and its population in 2001 was 8,240. It is situated between Ward Nos. 21 and 23 in the east, the Bishnumati river in the west, Ward No. 19 in the north and Ward No. 12 in the south.
